British explorer Alfred Isaac Middleton scoured the farthest corners of the world in search of zoological, botanical, and archaeological wonders at the end of the 19th century.
These newly discovered photos help shed light on some incredible discoveries during a series of unknown missions in regions of Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Amazon rainforest.
The last photo is an 18th-century artist’s rendering of the lost city of Dawleetoo, based on local Sumatran folklore.
Unfortunately, all of his journals and scholarly writings were lost in 1901 when Middleton and his team went missing on an expedition to Sumatra to discover the fabled lost cities of Dawleetoo.
Due to these tragic events, little is known about what you see in these fascinating photos.
