Ancient riches of immeasurable worth lay abandoned within the affluent Roman trade hub, a bustling metropolis that drew countless visitors around 2,000 years ago.

The archaeologists working on the HS2 project have unveiled the fascinating transformation of an Iron Age village in Northamptonshire into a thriving Roman trading city, attracting numerous visitors nearly 2,000 years ago. Remarkable discoveries made during the excavation at the site near the town of Chipping Wardens, known as Blackgrounds due to its rich dark soil, include cremation urns, fishing tools, shackles, a brooch featuring a serpent head, and over 300 Roman coins. A dedicated team of approximately 80 archaeologists engaged in the high-speed HS2 railway project spent a year meticulously excavating Blackgrounds—one of over 100 sites investigated between London and Birmingham since 2018.

Experts assert that the remnants of the Roman trading city represent ‘one of the most significant archaeological sites’ unearthed during the contentious £100 billion, three-line project, which involves constructing tunnels, pipes, pathways, and stations. A comprehensive archaeological endeavor is underway ‘ahead of’ the railway line, aiming to unveil the hidden secrets of Britain’s history. HS2 Ltd, the state-funded entity responsible for the line’s construction—marked by significant controversy due to the destruction of historic structures and natural landscapes—deems this excavation effort a ‘unique opportunity’ to trace Britain’s historical narrative."image"

Archaeologists affiliated with HS2 Ltd have identified this location as one of the most crucial archaeological sites within the project, situated near a small village on the Northamptonshire coast.
